For More Information, Contact: Eve Flanigan Program Manager 575-642-4825 - C 575-628-3030 - F http://www.carlsbadcoalition.net FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 13 November 2009 Area Gains National Recognition for Community Events The National Association of Town Watch has bestowed a national award upon Carlsbad and south Eddy County for its observation of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” The August 2009 celebration included a street dance, fun run, and 31 block parties hosted by neighborhood volunteers. Block parties were visited by members of local law enforcement and fire departments, who provided safety training. “This award represents what is right about our community,” said Eve Flanigan, Program Manager of Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition, the local sponsor of National Night Out. “It is a great reminder that, when people in neighborhoods come together to solve problems, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished.” 2009 marks the fourth year of National Night Out observances in south Eddy County, and the second time the area has earned national attention for its efforts. “The neighborhood block party hosts and hostesses are what make this program work,” said Flanigan. “This year saw the biggest first-time party ever. South Oak Street’s party, hosted by Mark Florez, had more than 65 people. National Night Out would not be possible without the incredible support from our law enforcement and fire personnel. This event draws neighborhoods together and has the power to save lives. Everyone involved is a hero, in my book.” National Night Out is held the first Tuesday of every August. In 2008, it was attended by 37 million Americans in 14,000 communities in the US, its territories and military bases worldwide.
